After Day 1 saw all four teams in Group A clinch only a single points, the situation is the same in the table. But with only two match-days to go, things have turned out to be very much crucial. France and Mexico will battle it out at 18:30 GMT on Thursday, June 17. Both sides are keen to make this encounter count.

Like they did in Germany 2006, France kicked off their 2010 World Cup campaign unconvincingly, managing only a goalless draw against 10-man Uruguay in their opening game. Les Bleus have been suffering from the squad’s internal problem concerning the unity in the team between players and the coach.

Back home, French fans are on their feet, waiting for the country’s national football team to live up to expectations. Failing to lose once again on Thursday night will not only stretch France’s winless run to three games, but also ring the alarm Les Bleus. Barcelona’s Eric Abidal is well aware of how important his side’s battle against Mexico will be. The defender explained:

“We have to play for a win and nothing else than a win against Mexico. In 2006, the situation was the same. We drew 0-0 with Switzerland to begin our campaign. But slowly, though confidently, we recorded victories over victories. It’s imperative for us to step it up and thus make it to the next round.”

Mexico Are Equally Determined

El Tri wonderfully denied the 2010 World Cup’s hosts South Africa from kicking off the competition with a victory. The Mexicans displayed good techniques on the ball and looked dangerous throughout the match against Bafana Bafana. Giovanni dos Santos was near perfection with his explosive runs that certainly reminded people of the world’s former best player Ronaldinho. By staying true to themselves, Mexico should be able to get a result against France’s Les Bleus. Mexico's Rafael Marquez celebrates with Giovanni dos Santos.

That’s something that striker Carlos Vela is targeting. Speaking to the media, the young forward revealed his thoughts:

“We always thought we could win all three matches before the first game. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Now, we can’t make any excuses. We have to win, whether we play against France or another side.

“My opinion is that we need to think about doing our work and rather free our minds from what France are going to do. After all, we know that we have an excellent team and that we can win.”

Echoing Carlos Vela’s statement Rafael Marquez, who clinched Mexico’s equalizer against South Africa, stated:

“I guess the match against France will need to be approached as such. I think it’s decisive. We must do our best to get the three points in order to move forward. As we would be aware of the result between South Africa and Uruguay, we will be forced to look more for the win. I think that will be good in a sense to know the outcome of that game and prepare well for the match against France.

“We know the power and they quality the French posses. At any given time, they can turn the game around. They have great players with great qualities. We can’t build our confidence on the fact that they haven’t scored yet, because they know that they have the quality to do so.

“In the World Cup, there are one or two chances. Our mission is to put at least one of them away, so that we can have the advantage. We are aware of that and we are working so that when we have one, we can put it away.”

Who will emerge victorious from this must-win battle?
