International Friendly Preview: Greece vs Paraguay

Two of the World Cup’s dark horses face off in pre-tournament friendly:

Two contenders, Greece and Paraguay, meet up for a friendly as a last tune up before the big tournament.

Greece and Paraguay are both big outsiders for the World Cup, but they each have fairly decent draws, and will be confident of getting beyond the group stage then, as Greece showed in Euro 2004, anything can happen.

The two meet on Wednesday for a friendly, with Paraguay the 6/4 (Coral) favourites to win the game, and that price is arguably a little on the big side. Greece have not been very convincing recently, and a loss to a poor Senegal side and a draw with North Korea means that they can’t be backed, at 2/1 (WilliamHill) with any confidence.

The Greeks have struggled of late, and looking for a bit of confidence and coherence before their big trip. They lost to Senegal 2-0, and that was a followed by a disappointing draw against North Korea, 2-2. Greece has drawn a tough group for the World Cup. In Group B, the Greeks are drawn with powerhouse Argentina, upstart Nigeria, and a surprising South Korea team that easily qualified for the games.

Paraguay edged North Korea, lost to Ireland, and drew against Ivory Coast in their friendly matches. They have high hopes for the tournament, drawing a group with Italy, Slovakia, and New Zealand. Italy looks to advance, and Paraguay aims to be with them. They have the Azzurri in their first match.
